Dr. Cheng Hiang Lee, MB BCh BAO, PhD, DipPaed, FRACP, is a paediatric gastroenterologist in Sydney with more than 20 years of experience working in paediatrics. He graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland and completed his early training at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children and various hospitals within the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network. Subsequently, he pursued specialised training in pediatric gastroenterology at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, including a fellowship in pediatric liver transplantation at the Australian National Liver Transplant Unit, leading to his admission as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2012.

In recognition of his academic dedication, Dr. Lee was honoured with the Australian Postgraduate Award, which financially supported his pursuit of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at the University of Sydney. His doctoral research focused on the epidemiology and immunopathogenesis of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease. After completing his PhD, he continued to contribute to academic medicine, serving as an Honorary Lecturer at Macquarie University and Honorary Senior Lecturer at The University of Notre Dame.

Presently, Dr. Lee devotes his time to private practice at Gems Medical Specialists in Epping. He performs endoscopy procedures at Westmead Private Hospital.

Dr Lee is a GESA-certified to perform gastroscopy and colonoscopy in children. He performs these procedures at Westmead Private Hospital.

Children with the following conditions who require urgent assessment will be seen through the Rapid Access Clinic. Please email your referral to reception@gemsmedic.com and call us at 02 7228 4428 to arrange an urgent appointment.

1. Suspected inflammatory bowel disease, particularly if presenting with:

  • Rectal bleeding or bloody diarrhoea
  • Fecal calprotectin level exceeding 150
  • Perianal disease (skin tags, fissure or fistula)

2. Suspected eosinophilic oesophagitis, especially in cases of:

  • Dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing)
  • Food bolus impaction (food stuck in the oesophagus)
  • History of asthma, eczema, hay fever, or food allergies.

3. Suspected coeliac disease with positive coeliac serology.
